I have a 73 C20 LWB with a 2 piece drive shaft, I went to drive shaft shop once asked them about making an aluminum one piece shaft for me, the length should be close to the same as the 2 piece. All you have to do use a tape measure to check. Remove the rear U joint straps from the rear yoke diff and set it on the ground. Now, ignore the carrier bearing completely and using the tape measure, put the end of the tape at the center line of the U joint on the slip yoke of the trans, go in a straight line to the rear diff yoke and stop at center line for the U joint of that yoke.

That will be your measurement. If you remove the end and set it to the side, measuring from trans slip yoke to rear diff yoke, it's more of a straight shot and then the only part that will slide in and out as it should would be the trans yoke, it's supposed to slide while driving.

Each trans is a diffrent length so the shaft would have to be from that style if I can remember right been 7 years but the long tail is 72" and the short is 68" but that was on a lwb and do you have a slip shaft or slip yoke that's eather way the yoke part of the shaft can be swapped out by buying a u joint that will let the two halfs mate.

BUT, the truck has a two piece driveshaft, and the front half does't have a "slip" mechanism in it, that's in the rear shaft. It is NOT bolted in either, just cut to length, finished off, and installed.

The off road guys use them with lifted suspensions for more travel in rough terrain, that's what they were designed for, but I've used them to make up for a too short shaft. If you think about it, when they raise their rigs up, they effectively lose some of the "slip" to the yoke, same as if the driveshaft was too short, imagine that.

I'm not talking about anything more than an inch or two however; I would't try to make up for 3 or more inches, that's for sure. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. Your rear end is the stock rear end? If it's not, that may have something to do with the descrepancy, and why your shaft may have been shortened. Good luck. There is about 2 inches of the yoke showing between the back of the trans and the end of the yoke by the u-joint. Usually I remember it should be 1 inch or less. I was just wondering how long a stock shaft is from center of the u-joint to center of u- joint is? IF you actually need more length, they do make yokes that are "long" and can be shortened to the length you need; I would only use one to make up for a couple of inches however, and not something like 6 inches.
